Visited the Goreme Open Air Museum before leaving the Cappadocia region.  The museum is a Monastic complex of churches and chapels carved out of the fairy chimneys and used between 9th and 11th Centuries.  Many of the churches contained frescoes in varying states of repair.  Unfortunately, you weren’t allowed to take photos.  We spent an hour or so looking around the museum, before hitting the road again.

Had an enforced lunch and coffee break (at least 1 hour) as a large number of people and 2 tow trucks recovered a petrol tanker that had fallen off the road and slid down a steep bank.  This was near Sarkisca.  Fortunately, we were at the front of the queue and there was plenty of action to watch.  Finally on our way again, heading onwards and upwards through mountains and high plateaux.

Started experiencing fuel starvation problems at around 4pm.  Closer investigation revealed that the diesel had started to solidify, blocking the fuel filter (it was at this time that we noticed that the thermometer was reading approx –15 degrees Celsius!).  We bought some diesel antifreeze additive (which we had assumed was added as we only fill at Shell or BP) but it was too late for the solids that had already formed.  Limped on without power until we reached Refahye, a very small town.  Found very seedy but warm hotel.  Couldn’t find eatery in town – had to go to filling station up the road!  Hot meal, soft drinks and tea for two came to approx £3.
